About Us
Tyler Zhou
Hello my name is Tyler Zhou! I go to Arcadia High School and I am currently a Senior. The reason why I am taking AP Environmental Science is to better enlighten myself about the positive and negative effects that we are causing to our environment. In my free time, I like to play games, hangout with friends, and walk around my neighborhood in order to clear my mind off of things. The goal for this project is to experience what is it like taking care of plants and to use the vegetables that we grow to make delicious food so that everyone in our class can enjoy.
Justin Phen
Sup guys, my name is Justin and I am a senior at Arcadia High School. Little about me... I am a national ranked Epee fencer and I have been doing that for almost 11 years now. Also, I am kinda a Hawaiian because I was born there. I decided to take APES is because I have always admired my friends for being able to experience planting food and also constructing a mini house at the end of the year. Since this is my last year living in the community of Arcadia, I really want to give back as much as I can by learning more about our environment and how to properly take care of it. As for this project, I really look forward to seeing my plants grow and to use them to cook amazing dishes for my classmates and teachers.
Kevin Song
Hey what's up guys, my name's Kevin and I'm currently a senior at Arcadia High School. At school I'm involved in Link Crew, SMW, and Key Club. In my free time I like to hang out with my friends, whether that be getting food, playing games at someones house, or just going on a boba run! My favorite movies are Coco, Interstellar, and Hamilton (even though it isn't a movie I still love it). I decided to take APES this year to learn more about the subject and see if I would be interested in it as a career path. Through this project I would like to learn how to create and manage a website, manage a garden, and also how to cook a variety of different dishes.
Mission Statement
We hope to address the three triple bottom line issues of economical, social, and environmental benefits of having a community garden while learning valuable skills through the family garden project. We will address the financial side of the triple bottom line by planting our own plants, which means we don't have to spend a lot of money on vegetables at the grocery store. The social side of the triple bottom line will be fulfilled through interactions with other people and with nature. We will interact with each other to plant and water, and interact with other groups that are in our area. Gardening will also serve as an escape from the studious life of a high school student and allow the gardeners to enjoy the weather and just be with nature. The environmental side of the triple bottom line will be met through us not using fertilizers and being all organic in our gardening. Not only will we help by not using these inorganic methods, but we help the environment by creating new habitats for insects around the gardens. Through our efforts, we hope to encourage other people, not only APES students, to live and make food this way.
Community Garden Benefits
Our community garden has multiple benefits, which include providing food and promoting the work of gardening and creating your own food. We will be able to use the produce that we have nurtured and grown through these months to chef up some delicious dishes for our class. Also, these gardens can inspire many APES and non-APES students to create their own garden in their homes. These home gardens can help lessen the financial strain of going to the grocery store and buying produce by having the produce at home. Not only does it reduce the money needed to buy the produce, but also lowers the amount needed to buy gas for driving. The community garden also benefits the environment, since growing more plants will provide a cleaner and more sustainable environment. In the end, the community garden benefits both the class that we are serving food to, ourselves since we are learning tons of life lessons that will be used later on in life, and the environment, which benefits from the amount of plants that are grown in the area.
